Band-Aids are a staple product for fixing kids' skinned knees, but they weren't always around. Before Band-Aids, people tied strips of cotton or muslin to a wound.

 -staple [ ˈsteɪpl ] 1.주된, 주요한 2.(스테이플러·호치키스의)'ㄷ'자 모양 철사 침

-staple product (경제) 주력상품 ex.a staple food product 주요식

-skinned 1.~한 피부를 가진 2.(경기장이)잔디가 없는 ex.A first grader fell down on the playground and skinned his knee. 한 초등학교 1학년생이 운동장에서 놀다가 넘어져 무릎이 까졌다.

-muslin  [ ˈmʌzlɪn ] 1.모슬린(속이 거의 다 비치는 고운 면직물)

Before that, people even used natural materials, such as leaves, to dress wounds.

So, who invented the first Band-Aid?

The story goes that in 1920, Earle E. Dickson, a worker at Johnson & Johnson, invented the Band-Aid because he was tired of dressing his accident-prone wife's fingers. Dickson laid out a piece of surgical tape and laid pieces of gauze on it at intervals.

 -prone  [ proʊn ] 1.(좋지 않은 일을) 하기[당하기] 쉬운 2.~하기[당하기] 쉬운 ex.accident-prone 사고를 잘 당하는

He covered the outside of the surgical tape with a strip of fabric, rolled the tape up, and stored it.

He was able to quickly cut off a piece wherever needed and the Band-Aid was born.

Johnson&Johnson continued to make improvements, such as adding holes to the strips so the wound could breathe and packaging the strips individually.
